Textile Artist Joyce Compton.
Joyce Compton says her interest in art began when she attended the Pacific International Quilt Show after she retired as a school psychologist. She was fascinated by the art quilts on display. She asked members of her quilt guild if anyone would be interested in forming an art group. Eight members signed up and the Art Focus group was started. They share techniques and help each other with they study and make art quilts. She has taken a number of classes on art quilting techniques. She loves to visit art galleries and museums to see how other artists work. When looking at paintings, Joyce often asks herself how she could achieve that appearance with fabric and machine quilting.
Joyce says, “My work is inspired by nature and my travels. I take lots of photos and use elements from these in my quilts. My work is mostly realistic landscapes which are heavily quilted. Trees are often the focal point. I often used fabric that I have painted or dyed in my work.”
Joyce holds a Master of Science degree in School Psychology; Pupil Personnel Service/School Psychology Life Credential; California Assoc. of School Psychologists-Outstanding Regional School Psychologist of the Year. She enjoys quilting, travel, reading, gardening and playing bridge.
